St. Matthew's is an established part of the Newton community and is the only Episcopal Church in Newton. Individual members are involved in almost every aspect of Newton community life. The church sits on a large picturesque lot just across from one of the city's elementary schools which uses the facility for its Weekday Bible School program sponsored by area churches. Each Tuesday, our Payee Program assists members of the Newton community with managing their finances by writing checks for them and helping them budget their money.
Our communicants include young families, middle-aged and the elderly. Sermons are lectionary based gospel and we celebrate the ministry of all baptized persons. We enjoy an active parish life and together we are living and learning on our spiritual journey.
Worship services are held at 10:15 a.m. on Sundays. Sunday school classes are taught at 9:00 a.m. for most ages from September through April. The Senior High and Middle School groups may set their own times to meet. A nursery is provided for infants and preschoolers during the 10:15 a.m. Eucharist. The rector is served by layreaders, chalice bearers, acolytes and altar guild members at all services At special services the music is enhanced by children's or adult choirs who share their ministry with the congregation.
In addition to our Vestry, our governing body, there are eight committees involved with activities and concerns within and beyond the parish. They are Finance, Buildings & Grounds, Worship, Education, Outreach, Communications, Parish Life/Pastoral Care, and Evangelism.
We are blessed with endowments that are administered by the Permanent Endowment Fund Committee and the Operational Endowment Fund Committee, which meet quarterly to discuss and authorize dispersion of funds for capital expenditures in the church and community charities.
We are an open and caring Christian community and we welcome you to visit and find out more about our church.
